How are print-on-demand and dropshipping related?

These terms are often used interchangeably. You might hear: “We use dropshipping” or “Our webshop runs on print-on-demand.” But are they the same? Not quite. Both models allow you to sell without holding inventory, and both can involve an external supplier handling fulfillment. However, there are some clear differences. In this blog, we explain how print-on-demand (POD) and dropshipping compare – especially in the context of print products.

What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a logistics model where a seller offers products without keeping them in stock. Once a customer places an order, it is automatically forwarded to an external supplier. That supplier handles production (if necessary) and ships the product directly to the customer. The seller is responsible for sales only – the rest is outsourced.

Dropshipping is best known as an e-commerce model and is commonly used via webshops. But it can also run through other sales channels, such as email, phone, marketplaces (like Amazon or Bol.com), or B2B portals. The success of this model depends on reliable suppliers, accurate product data, and a smooth ordering process.

Key features of dropshipping:

  • No inventory required.
  • Shipping is outsourced.
  • The product is sent directly – often white label – to the customer.
  • Usually standard products, such as mugs, electronics, or other stocked items.

What is print-on-demand?

With print-on-demand (POD), a product is only produced after a customer places an order. This mainly applies to print products – items that need to be customized with specific text or visuals. Examples include a flyer with a personalized message, a banner for a local event, or a brochure created for one organization.

This production method is typically used in online environments, like a webshop or ordering portal, but it also works for offline orders via email, phone, or direct communication with customers.

Key features of print-on-demand:

  • No inventory required.
  • Production starts after the order.
  • Fulfillment can be handled in-house or outsourced.
  • Usually personalized products, such as custom T-shirts, business cards, books, or flyers in brand style.

Is print-on-demand the same as dropshipping?

Not exactly. Print-on-demand is a production method where an item is made only after it’s been ordered. When both production and shipping are outsourced, POD fits within the dropshipping model. In that case, the seller acts as a reseller or print manager: a middleman between the customer and the print supplier. The reseller handles sales, marketing, and customer service, while the supplier produces and ships the item directly – often white label – to the customer. From the customer’s perspective, the external supplier usually remains invisible.
So: POD is considered dropshipping only if the logistics process is outsourced.

If a company handles its own production and shipping, it is using POD, but not dropshipping.

How does Prindustry fit into this?

Prindustry offers a platform that supports print-on-demand workflows, where production and delivery are often outsourced to external print partners. Resellers and print managers can offer an extensive range of print, signage, and promotional products via their own webshop, and easily outsource production through the integrated Marketplace. For marketers and brand owners, the platform offers ordering portals where they can place print orders that go directly to selected print suppliers. The Prindustry platform automates the entire print ordering process – from order to delivery.
